ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate association between loneliness and depressive episode among rural older people. Methods:A total of 839 rural adults (aged over 60 years) from Liuyang in Hunan were enrolled by using multi-stage cluster sampling method. The Short-form of the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Social Support Rating Scale, the Life Events Scale for the Elderly,Quality of Life Scale, and the Activity of Daily Living Scale were used to assess loneliness, the social support condition, the stimulating quantity of negative life events, the quality of life, and the abilities of daily life activities, respectively. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-Ⅳ-TR Axis I Disorders questionnaire survey was performed by a face-to-face interview. Results:The prevalence rate of depressive episode among the rural older people was 6.8%.Multivariable analysis showed that the elderly who were with stronger loneliness were the risk factor of depression (OR=1.126,95%CI 1.038 to 1.221).Conclusion:Loneliness is positively associated with an increased risk of depressive episode.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the prevalence and related factors of suicide risk among rural adults in Liuyang. Methods:A total of 2052 rural adults were sampled by multi-staged cluster sampling. The suicide risk was evaluated with the suicide questionnaire section of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI).The Self-designed General Information Inventory,Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9),and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ) were used to assess the symptoms. Results:Among the 2052 participants,13.8% reported suicide risk,in which 13.0% of mild risk,0.4% of moderate risk and 0.4% of severe risk.Ordinal logistic regres sion analysis showed that female (OR =2.06,95% CI:1.54-2.76),primary school education and below (OR =1.80,95% CI:1.07-3.05),negative coping styles (OR =1.07,95% CI:1.03-1.11),and severe, moderate and mild depression (OR =24.61,5.98,2.75,95% CI:12.63-47.99,3.95-9.07,2.01-3.76) were main risk factors of suicide risk. Conclusion:It suggest that the current rate of suicide risk among rural adults in Liuyang is higher.Female, those with lower education level, depression and higher scores of negative coping styles may be more likely to have suicide risk.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the reliability and validity of the short-form of the UCLA loneliness scale (ULS-8) among Chinese rural community-dwelling elderly.@*METHODS@#ULS-8 was used for 839 Chinese rural community-dwelling elderly during face-to-face interviews.@*RESULTS@#After deleting item-3 (I am an outgoing person) and item-6 (I can find companionship when I want it), the exploratory factor analysis showed that the construction of the new scale (ULS-6) fit the original construction of ULS-8, a single-factor resolution. Cronbach's α coefficient of ULS-6 was 0.831. Test-retest reliability was 0.715. All item-total correlations reached statistical significance. The total score of ULS-6 was correlated to quality of life, social support, suicidal ideation, and current major depression episode.@*CONCLUSION@#ULS-6 shows satisfactory reliability and validity and meets the needs of psychometric properties, and can be used for the evaluation of loneliness among Chinese rural elderly.

ABSTRACT

AIMTo investigate whether AcSDKP can inhibit proliferation and collagen synthesis in cultured rat cardiac fibroblasts mediated by PDGF.

METHODSNeonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts were isolated. The cell proliferation was observed by 3H-proline incorporation assay.

RESULTSOn the culture of 0.4% FBS, PDGF stimulated cardiac fibroblasts proliferation and collagen synthesis with a dose-dependent manner at the concentrations from 1 ng/ml to 20 ng/ml, in which 10 ng/ml PDGF reached its peak. AcSDKP at the concentration from 10(-10) mol/L to 10(-8) mol/L could inhibit cardiac fibroblasts proliferation and collagen synthesis mediated by PDGF. 10(-9) mol/L AcSDKP attained its peak on inhibiting cardiac fibroblasts proliferation and collagen synthesis.

CONCLUSIONAcSDKP can inhibit proliferation and collagen synthesis in cultured rat cardiac fibroblasts mediated by PDGF.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the role of AcSDKP on collagen synthesis and degradation in cultured rat cardiac fibroblasts.

METHODSNeonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts were isolated and stimulated by PDGF. The cell proliferation was observed by (3)H-TdR incorporation assay. The synthesis of collagen was measured by (3)H-proline incorporation assay. The expression of type I and type III collagen and MMP-1 protein were measured by Western blot. The MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity was evaluated with zymography assay.

RESULTSPDGF stimulated cardiac fibroblasts proliferation with increased collagen synthesis and type I and type III collagen protein expressions as well as MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities and MMP-1 expression. AcSDKP inhibited cardiac fibroblasts proliferation induced by PDGF and reduced collagen synthesis and type I and type III collagen protein expression. AcSDKP also further up-regulated MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities and MMP-1 expression in cardiac fibroblasts induced by PDGF.

CONCLUSIONAcSDKP inhibited proliferation and collagen synthesis and up-regulated matrix metalloproteinases activity or expression induced by PDGF, which was possibly related with the effect of AcSDKP anti-fibrosis.

ABSTRACT

cases of Warthin tumor in parotid gland were collected, the selection of operating style and personal experience in treatment were introduced. The results showed that most of the patients were senior man, the site of the tumors was all in parotid gland, the majority of the tumor was single nodule with exception of some patient who had a multiple nature. Tumor recurrence was found in patients with improper method. The results suggested that for patients who are suspected of Warthin tumor, careful physical examination and B Ultrosonic scan are necessary for both sides of parotid gland. Different operating style should be considered according to the differences of tumor site and number.
